Contributions to AIESEC’s Vision of Peace and Fulfillment of Humankinds Potential:
Jan has contributed to AIESEC’s vision through his impressive achievements in diplomatic area. He was the Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations (2012-2016). He was elected President of the United Nations General Assembly, for its sixtieth session. Eliasson served as Swedish State Secretary for Foreign Affairs from 1994 to 2000 and as Swedish Minister for Foreign Affairs in 2006. He has been mediator in the Iran/Iraq conflict, in the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict and in Darfur Sudan, and active for the UN in countries such as Somalia, Mozambique and the Balkans. The Swedish Government has appointed ambassador Jan Eliasson from June 1, 2017 as the new Chairman of the SIPRI Governing Board.
Jan Eliasson was born in Gothenburg, Sweden. He was an exchange student in Indiana, United States and was commissioned a naval officer in the reserve after training at the Royal Swedish Naval Academy in 1962. In 1965 he earned a master’s degree in economics from the School of Business, Economics and Law at the University of Gothenburg where he was also a president of the local AIESEC committee. Since his university days, he has been engaged in politics and diplomacy, among other things having served as the minister of foreign affairs of Sweden. On 2 March 2012, Jan Eliasson was appointed Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations by Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon. He took office as Deputy Secretary-General on 1 July 2012.
